TWIN BIN Service

What changes have been made to our refuse and recycling services?

From September 2008, St. Albans District Council changed from the refuse sack collection service to a twin bin service. The twin bin service consists of; one wheeled bin for landfill waste and one for green waste (waste for composting including cardboard and food waste) per household in addition to the existing recycling box scheme. The Council changed to a wheeled bin service as part of wider directives from the EU that requires less recyclable and biodegradable waste to be landfilled. The twin bin service combined with the recycling box scheme encourages greater recycling. This should bring the district's recycling rate to over 40% making it one of the best in the country, as well as being a practical, sensible, environmentally friendly and cost effective method. The Council's target is 50% recycling rate by 2010/11. There will be a landfill tax of £150 a tonne if Hertfordshire has not reached 50% by 2012.
