In the short to medium term providing additional recycling services costs more. In the longer term, as land filling waste becomes more expensive, it makes sense to recycle as much as possible. Currently landfill tax costs are set to substantially rise per tonne by 2010. There will also be financial penalties of £150 per tonne levied against councils that do not meet government targets to reduce the amount of green waste going to landfill. These additional costs would be met by council taxpayers.
